About the film
Widely considered to be one of the most influential films of all time, Battleship Potemkin takes place during the Russian Revolution of 1905, as deplorable conditions on board the armoured cruiser Potemkin drive the ship’s crew to mutiny.
Eisenstein wrote the film as propaganda, but also used it to test his theories of montage. At the time, revolutionary Soviet filmmakers were experimenting with the effect of film editing on audiences. Through his use of montage techniques, Eisenstein’s aim was to maximise the viewer’s sympathy for the rebellious crew of the battleship and hatred for their overlords.
