The George Community Hub in Newnham on Severn
We are friendly and welcoming community hub in the Forest of Dean in the thriving Severnside village of Newnham on Severn. Following a fundraising campaign, our historic building was secured by the community in 2021. A team of dedicated volunteers worked together to bring The George back to life for the whole community to enjoy.
Welcome to The George
We want everyone in the community to benefit from our social hub which includes a café, a gallery and a second hand shop. We host talks, music events, art exhibitions, workshops and lots of creative activities for all ages. We’re lucky to have a prime spot on the beautiful heritage high street and we enjoy being part of an emerging creative scene in Newnham.
Cafe
We offer a fantastic range of artisan teas and coffees, cold drinks and alcohol. Our talented volunteer bakers provide a delicious selection of cakes for our cafe. We’re passionate about food and sourcing local produce and it’s important to us to be sustainable and affordable where possible.
Our environment
We are a volunteer-led organisation and our vision is to help others learn new skills, build confidence and collaborate in a supportive environment. We’re a family-friendly space and we also welcome well-behaved four-legged friends.

On your own, or not in the mood for cooking? Join us at The George for another relaxed and friendly ‘Pay As You Feel’ Sunday lunch. No fixed price – just pay what you feel is fair. Places limited to 50, so please book ahead and make sure you arrive in good time on the day.

SASHIKO course with Ally Goff– Wednesday 7 and 21 October, from 2.00 – 4.00 pm
Explore the Japanese craft of using simple embroidery to mend and decorate fabric with tutor Ally Goff. Over two 2-hour sessions, you will learn the basics of the craft, including different stitch patterns and use of appliqué. Cost: £32.50. Please book early to be sure of a place!
SOUNDBATHS with Sound Therapist Amabel Mortimer – Wednesday 7 October, 6.00-7.00pm
SONIC HEALING
Tune into wellness... Vibrate with harmony... Immerse yourself in therapeutic sounds that calm the mind, heal the body and uplift the spirit.

F.W. Harvey & The Legacy of Nature Writing – Saturday 10 October, from 11.30 am
The Gloucestershire poet F.W. Harvey led the appreciation of the natural beauty of the Forest of Dean in the early twentieth century. Join us in Newnham to celebrate his legacy, with readings of his verse and of work by contemporary poets from The Forest of Dean.
Poetry Night: The Things We Leave Behind – Readings by Rose Lennard & Angela France + Open Mic, Saturday 10 October, 7.30pm
Join us for a very special evening of poetry, featuring readings by acclaimed Gloucestershire poets Rose Lennard and Angela France, and an Open Mic session in which audience members are invited to read their own work.
