FROM NORTH TO SOUTH – Paintings of Landscapes and People by Miranda Richmond, Tuesday 17 to Saturday 21 February, 10.30am to 4.00pm

Miranda Richmond’s work stems from a deeply perceptive connection to the subject, and her images are often as intense as they are contemplative. Wherever she travels, she aims to depict the landscape as if she were a part of it. FROM NORTH TO SOUTH comprises landscapes from the North of England and from around her new location in Chepstow. It includes studies of Byland Abbey in North Yorkshire (above) and Tintern Abbey, as well as portraits and figure compositions.
The exhibition is open daily from 10.30am to 4.00pm. Admission is free, and you are welcome to take the lift to our first-floor gallery if you have difficulty using the stairs.
About the artist
Miranda Richmond was born in Buckinghamshire, studied in Bristol (BA Fine Art) and then lived in rural North Yorkshire (1982-94) and in Middlesbrough until 2024 when she relocated to South Wales. She has worked primarily as a landscape painter, but has an ongoing interest in portraiture and figure work. Subjects have included the industrial and post-industrial landscapes of Teesside and the Yorkshire Moors and coast, but she has also made many painting trips including to Scotland, Egypt, Spain and Australia.
As a landscape painter her usual practice is to work outdoors directly from the subject, frequently on a series in one location over a period of months, even years, through different seasons and times of day. She makes numerous drawings of a subject in a variety of media, attempting to discover a dynamic structure which is both a physical response and the result of careful observation.
Portraiture has included paintings of friends and relations, colleagues and various local residents.
Miranda has exhibited in many solo and group shows in the North-East and elsewhere. Alongside her painting practice she has worked variously as a care and support worker, in adult education, and in running classes and workshops.
