DESCRIPTION:Discover the fun and satisfaction of making your own delicious summer breads at home with expert baker and teacher Dede Liss. \nOver two days\, you will make at least three loaves of your own to take home with you and learn all the skills of making Foccacia\, olive sticks\, Fatayer (little Lebanese pies)\, Pitta bread and Flammkuche\, a delicious pizza-like flatbread typically coated with fromage blanc or crème fraîche\, thinly sliced onions and lardons. \nTopics covered will also include:\n\n•  long fermentation yeasted dough\n•  using a ‘biga’ or ‘pre ferment’\n•  shaping dough\n•  using a couche. \nIngredients and equipment including aprons are provided\, and Dede’s own recipes will be shared at the end. To ensure individual tuition\, numbers are limited to four. Dede will also provide free individual follow-up help after the course if you need it. \nCourse dates and times\nThe weekend course will be held on Saturday and Sunday 25 and 26 April. Sessions will run from 4.00pm  to 6.00pm (Saturday) and 9.00am to 1.00pm (Sunday). The cost is £100 per person\, including ingredients. A light lunch will be provided on the Sunday. \nHow to book\nPlease sign up for the course by sending us a completed booking form. Payment details are included in the form and we will confirm your booking once payment has been received. \nAbout Dede\nA teacher of baking and breadmaking for more than ten years\, Dede Liss ran her own successful village bakery and is a former tutor for the WI at Denman College. Her approach is practical and straightforward\, with the emphasis on hands-on learning.

Space is limited\, so to reserve your seat\, please book a free ticket using the form below.\nBar and snacks will be available\, and there is a lift to the first-floor gallery if you have difficulty using the stairs. \nMeet the poets\n \nBorn and raised in the Forest of Dean\, Stewart Carswell studied Physics at Southampton University and approaches poetry with the mindset of a scientist. His poems have appeared in numerous collections and he has performed at the Cheltenham and Aldeburgh poetry festivals and around Cambridge and East Anglia. His full-length debut Earthworks was published by Indigo Dreams in 2021. \n \nJane Spray lives in the Forest of Dean. Her poems have appeared in Poetry News\, Mslexia\, Pennine Platform\, Allegro\, and The Haibun Journal. She has read at Cheltenham Poetry Festival\, and her River Wye poems were set to music by Fiona Taylor and performed in 2024 and 2025. From 2024 to 2025 Jane was Poet in Residence at Clearwell Caves in the Forest. Her debut collection Cave Whale will be published by Alba Publishing this Spring. \nAbout the Open Mic\nIf you have a poem of your own that you would like to read in front of a live audience\, you are welcome to take part in the Open Mic Session. Bar and snacks. Lift access to our Gallery available. \nAbout John-Paul Gard\nJazz organist John-Paul first fell in love with the sound of the Hammond organ at the age of ten. Encouraged by his father\, a keen organist and music enthusiast\, he went on to take a job in his local organ shop\, where he met some of the finest players and demonstrators in the business and played many concerts. Today\, his style is heavily influenced by Jimmy Smith\, Jimmy McGriff and Joey DeFrancesco\, with shades of Errol Garner\, Oscar Peterson\, Harry Stoneham\, Curt Prina\, Max Takano\, George Flurey\, Tony Pegler Keith Evans and Alan Haven. \nJohn-Paul loves to improvise and to work with other like-minded musicians. As well as recording many albums under his own name\, he has played on more than 40 albums by other well-known figures on the jazz scene. A recent success has been his collaboration with The Jon Dalton Organ Trio based in Venice Beach USA\, whose album Warm Ghosts in a Cold World is currently climbing the Jazz charts in the USA.

SUMMARY:An Evening with STEVE ASHLEY\, Saturday 6 June\, 7.30pm
DESCRIPTION:Steve Ashley is one of British folk’s finest singer-songwriters. His songs have been covered by a legion of folk artists\, including Fairport Convention\, Anne Briggs\, Ralph McTell & Wizz Jones\, Show of Hands\, Martin Simpson\, Phil Beer\, O’Hooley & Tidow and St Agnes Fountain. \n \nSteve’s album career began in 1974 with the ground-breaking Stroll On\, which is still regarded as a folk-rock classic. Since then\, he has released twelve critically acclaimed albums of original songs. Support for his work has come from a diverse mix of record companies\, including Decca\, Motown\, Fairport’s ‘Woodworm’ and the premier folk label Topic. \nFor over half a century\, Steve has consistently melded tradition with innovation\, delivering intelligent and inspired lyrics set to distinctive original melodies. A veteran of CND and the protest movement\, his songs challenge injustice and celebrate everyday life and the natural environment\, highlighting the threats to both. \nHis latest solo album\, One More Thing received three five-star reviews and a place in the American magazine Goldmine’s Best Albums of 2018\, while his album This Little Game was in two UK lists of The Best Folk Albums of 2015 in The Telegraph and Folk Radio. \nWith over fifty album credits to his name\, Steve has recorded with the best in folk. He’s sung with Anne Briggs\, Shirley Collins and Linda Thompson\, and played with Richard Thompson\, John Williams\, Danny Thompson\, Robin Williamson and Fairport Convention. In 2013 the prolific rock author\, Dave Thompson published Fire and Wine\, an illustrated account of Steve’s career with photographs and contributions from many of his peers. \nSteve is a consummate entertainer and has what America’s Variety magazine has called ‘one of the funniest dry stage raps’.  He has toured throughout the UK\, Europe and the USA and appeared on the main stage at Glastonbury\, Cambridge Folk Festival and many times at Fairport’s Cropredy Convention (left). He has performed his songs with chamber orchestras conducted by Nick Drake’s arranger\, the late Robert Kirby\, and also as a lead singer with The Albion Country Band\, and his own bands Ragged Robin and The Steve Ashley Band. \nIn 1991\, with many radio and TV appearances already under his belt\, Steve collaborated with his close friend\, the late Roger Deakin (author of Waterlog)\, to create music for two of Roger’s television films\,The Ballad of the Ten Rod Plot (1991) and  Stable Lads (1995). Sadly\, in 2006 Roger died from a brain tumour\, and a year later\, Steve commemorated his life in the song\, Friend of The Rivers on his album\, Time and Tide. \nIn 2017\, Steve recorded a live session for The Folk Show with Mark Radcliffe (BBC Radio 2)\, and his performance of Best Wishes was repeated at the end of the year in The Best of The Sessions. \nIn 2021 his ‘Family Album’\, originally recorded with members of Fairport Convention in 1979\, was reissued with extra tracks. The following year The Scotsman published a chart of the ten best recent reissues\, with Steve’s ‘Family Album Revisited’ chosen as number one. DESCRIPTION:Local artist Tony Hopkins presents a fascinating array of paintings inspired by 60s and 70s comics\, record sleeves\, advertising\, posters\, ephemera and “by the people  places and traditions I have known and loved in the local community over the past thirty years.” \nArtist\, musician and songwriter Tony Hopkins studied in Newcastle\, Five Acres FoD\, Falmouth and Somerset and worked in adult education with SEN groups and within local communities\, using creativity to reach hard-to-engage adult learners. He currently plays music locally and runs a music group for adults who have suffered head injuries. \nHe writes: “I don’t like slick digital emptiness or excessive reliance on technique\, preferring simple and direct images and/or collisions of themes (all the unsorted washing in the tub on spin cycle to shrink\, let colours run and make a jumble of patterns through the glass) to create images in which the viewer can create their own narratives.”

She started songwriting at an early age and began her professional career playing for classical dancers and performing with pop bands\, going on to work as a solo café violinist in France\, playing in a circus band and later joining a prestigious Bal Musette orchestra. Although Gypsy Jazz remains Gina’s first love\, she has embraced many musical styles\, becoming a sought-after session musician and playing in numerous bands and at many major UK festivals\, including Glastonbury. She has also toured widely abroad and made several visits to Japan.\nShe currently plays with the Quirkish Delights  and The Schmoozenbergs.

DESCRIPTION:As part of this year’s FarOpen Trail\, we’re delighted to host an exhibition by Sam Wilkins who specialises in semi-abstract landscapes of the local area and Eleanor Woolley\, whose portraits and observations of the human scene are equally bold and characterful. \nSam Wilkins\nIn her landscapes\, Sam seeks out the geometry in the shapes before her\, finding patterns\, playing with negative space and trying to find that delicate equilibrium\, similar to an algebraic equation\, that balances colour\, texture and form to create a pleasing outcome. \n \nEleanor Woolley\nBased in Gloucestershire\, Eleanor is a figurative and landscape painter\, taking her inspiration from both the urban and rural landscape and the human interaction within it. After gaining a BA Hons in Sculpture at Leeds University\, she travelled for some time in Asia before coming home to study furniture-making. Eleanor worked as a cabinet-maker and a restorer before returning to Fine Art painting. \n

In the 1980s\, his firm was selected to represent the consumer electronics giant Amstrad\, and Nick became responsible for handling all Alan Sugar’s business and charitable activities. After selling his business\, he retired early to his house in south-west France but soon found himself called back by Lord Sugar and persuaded to take an onscreen role alongside him in the TV show The Apprentice. “I fought hard against it\,” says Nick\, “but he cajoled me – in a muscular sort of way.” Nick and his original opposite number Margaret Mountford went on to become the surprise stars of one of the longest-running and most popular shows on British television. \n

All welcome. \nPlease note that lift access is available to the first floor Gallery. \nAbout Kevin Figes\nKevin is a Bristol-based saxophonist\, composer and film-maker and a leading figure on the UK jazz scene. He first studied saxophone with Elton Dean and later attended the Guildhall School of Music and Drama\, studying with Tim Garland. He had a notable association performing and recording with Keith Tippett.  \nSince 2007 Figes has composed and produced many well-received recordings with his own quartet. Recent work includes ‘Changing Times’ (2020)\, which received a four-star review from Dave Gelly in the Guardian\, and ‘Wallpaper Music’ (2021) (with Brigitte Beraha on vocals) –  described as  a “kaleidoscopic blizzard” by John Fordham in Jazzwise. \nOther projects have included ‘4-Sided Triangle’ (with Mike Outram)\, an Octet and the 15-piece big band Resonation. Figes has played at Ronnie Scott’s with Pee Wee Ellis and Fred Wesley\, Bobby Shew and Denny Ilett’s Electric Lady Big Band\, of which he is a member. He has also performed on the Park stage at Glastonbury with the music of Barry Gray and major festivals with This Is The Kit. All welcome! \nMeet the poets\nOriginally from the Forest of Dean but now based in Bristol\, Elizabeth Parker is a co-founder of the poetry group The Spoke. Her pamphlet Antinopolis was published by Eyewear in 2016. Her first collection In Her Shambles was published by Seren in 2018 and her second\, Cormorant\, in February 2024. She is currently working on two novels inspired by her experiences as a secondary school teacher. \n  \n  \n  \n  \nVal Ormrod is a writer and poet from the Forest of Dean who has won many awards and been widely published in anthologies and poetry journals. She is also involved with several local writing groups and has read her work at Cheltenham and Mitcheldean festivals. Her memoir of caring for her father\, In My Father’s Memory\, was adapted for the stage and performed in theatres in Gloucester and South Wales. \n  \n  \n  \n  \nOpen Mic Session \nIf you have a poem of your own that you would like to read in front of a live audience\, please take part in our Open Mic session. DESCRIPTION:Kruger National Park is one of Africa’s largest game reserves\, with a high density of wild animals including lions\, leopards\, rhinos\, elephant and buffalo. Hundreds of other mammals make their home here\, as do diverse bird species such as vultures\, eagles and storks. But today Kruger’s rich natural heritage is under threat – from poaching\, urban development\, drought and desertification\, animal overpopulation and mining. \nThrough her charity work\, Bristol vet and conservationist Elisa Best has been in the forefront of efforts to protect the park’s wildlife. In this fascinating talk\, she introduces its incredible animals\, landscapes and plant life\, and shares practical advice on visiting the reserve. She also explores the challenges facing the park\, and the work being done to protect its wildlife\, drawing on her own firsthand experience caring for orphaned rhinos and supporting anti-poaching initiatives. \nThis is a Pay As You Feel Event\, and proceeds will be shared with Elisa’s animal charity Blankets for Baby Rhinos. Discover the fascinating history of Lord’s in this illustrated talk by Steven Miell\, an official Lord’s Tour Guide and the author of a recently published history of this legendary sporting venue. \nThis is a ‘Pay As you Feel’ event and donations are welcome to help us cover our over running costs. Drinks and snacks will be available from the bar\, and there is a lift to the Gallery from the ground floor. \n \nAbout Steven Miell  \nAfter a lengthy career in financial services\, Steven Miell became a Tour Guide at Lord’s Cricket Ground in 2019 and has led more than 13\,000 visitors around this historic ground. Before this\, Steven played first eleven club cricket for many years\, representing Lydney CC\, Chingford CC\, Havant CC\, and most recently\, Wanstead & Snaresbrook CC. In 1985 he became a playing Member of MCC\, playing for the Club on more than fifty occasions. Steven’s book Lord’s Cricket Ground in 50 Memorials is published by Amberley\, and signed copies will be on sale at the event. \nWithin its walls\, Lord’s contains many memorials honouring cricket’s history and the MCC members and cricketers associated with this famous old ground. Several stands are named in memory of leading cricketers and the famous Long Room and  MCC Museum house priceless cricket memorabilia.
