SUMMARY:DRAW LARGE EXHIBITION all drawings start with a mark
DESCRIPTION:The Draw Large initiative offered a number of mini-residencies for artists to expand their practice by working on a large-scale drawing\, supporting them to create new work during the dark days of winter. Jackson’s Art Supplies donated rolls of paper\, so each artist was given a 1.5 metre square of Fabriano and free rein to experiment\, network and draw on a scale that their home studios might not accommodate. \nThis brief but beautiful exhibition is open for only one week – 25th February – 1st March 11am-4pm. \nOn the final day (Saturday 1st March) you are invited to join the artists to discuss the project and their work. 2-4pm \nWe’ve had great feedback on this pilot and hope this professional development for artists can continue and become a regular occurrence in The George. \nParticipating artist Grace Engel said “Draw Large has been a great opportunity to take on a challenge\, network with other artists\, stretch my creative comfort zone and work alongside others in a beautiful studio space.” \nThe artists come from a range of art practices\, including glass making\, video and sculpture\, as well as printmakers and other visual art media. They are: Ali Roe\, Carolyn Black\, Cherry Lyne\, Chris Comins\, Claire Sibley\, Dorota Rapacz\, Grace Engel\, Jacqui Grange\, Laura Liddell\, Pat Homewood\, Sharon Foley\, Steph Boocock\, Sue Chudley & Wendy Rhodes.

SUMMARY:STILL OUT ambient road trip – Film Screening\, Saturday 12 April\, 7.30pm
DESCRIPTION:Recently premiered at the Stroud Film Festival\, Still Out is an audio-visual collaboration between music producers Will Cookson and Tom Haverly and filmmaker Rufus Exton. The screening will be followed by a Q&A with the filmmakers and by DJ sets inspired by the film. \nNon-narrative in form yet resonant with embedded meanings\, Still Out evokes a road trip from North Yorkshire to North Devon which Will and Tom took together in the summer of 2024. It features luminous footage of the natural world and a soundtrack inspired by their long-standing interest in ambient and electronic music. \nThe film is also an oblique homage to The KLF’s iconic 1990 album Chill Out\, which the pair revisited after it turned up unexpectedly a few years back in Tom’s dad’s record collection. To create their own version\, Will and Tom relocated to the Devon coast in late summer 2023\, splicing together an audio collage from a mix of original and found recordings in a remote cabin with no electricity or mobile reception. \nOnly after Will met friend and filmmaker Rufus Exton later that year to discuss visiting various landscapes referenced in the music did the idea of creating a visual counterpart take shape. The resulting work is a 40-minute reflection on the mental and emotional shift that occurs when we step away from the routine of daily life. An adventure in feeling and form\, it celebrates our ever-changing relationship to the world around us and the mystery of what it means to pass through time and space.

DESCRIPTION:Local farmer Chris North reveals how regenerative farming can improve soil health\, enhance biodiversity\, build resilience in the face of climate change and go beyond sustainability to actively restore and enhance ecosystems. \n\n\n\n\n\nChris writes:\n‘Since starting to farm in my own right in 2018 I’ve seen the weather patterns drastically change from traditional seasons to real extremes. As a custodian of the land I have a real passion for pasture-based farming. This\, along with the extreme weather patterns\, really focused my mind on what we farmers can do to improve our environmental credentials. I have taken the farm down the regenerative route not only in order to provide quality feed for my cows\, but also to improve the biodiversity in my soil and grasslands and sequester more carbon.’

SUMMARY:Jack Bessant & Betsy Beard\, Saturday 24 May\, 7.30pm
DESCRIPTION:Above: Betsy Beard’s musical partnership with Jack Bessant began when she sang backing vocals for him during a studio session. The duo’s current set list features a blend of collaborations and solo pieces.  \nLocal musician Betsy Beard first took up the guitar during lockdown and quickly progressed to writing her own material\, drawing on influences such as US alt-rock outfit Mazzy Star and English singer-songwriter Nick Drake. Performance has always played a key part in Betsy’s life\, but for the last four years creating original music has taken centre stage. Travel also inspires Betsy and she is looking forward to creating new material when she visits South America later this year. \nA founding member of legendary 90’s alternative rock band Reef\, Jack Bessant‘s career has reached the highest altitudes\, from stadium tours to industry awards and platinum-selling albums. In 2015\, Jack launched his solo career with a vision to nourish his soul and others around him\, sharing his passion for the natural environment and his rooted connection to the West Country. Fusing Americana\, folk and blues with heavy rock and trip-hop\, Jack has performed at a wide array of UK festivals\, from Glastonbury\, Isle of Wight and Reading to Elements and Bear Grylls’ Gone Wild Festival. Global festivals have included Fuji Rock (Japan)\, Rock AM Ring (Germany) and the Big Day Out (Australia). SUMMARY:FRAGMENTS - Recent works by Esmée and Catherine Van Giap\, Tuesday 10 to Saturday 21 June\, 11.00am to 4.00pm
DESCRIPTION:Catherine and Esmée Van Giap write:\n‘Fragment means ‘a small part broken off or separated from something’.\n‘This exhibition showcases recent works by the two artists side by side\, where they come together to contrast yet complement each other\, and demonstrate the power of the materials being used.\n‘Throughout this exhibition\, we invite visitors to reflect and consider the physical materials used\, as well as the concepts and narratives proposed. As mother and daughter\, shared ideas of natural landscapes\, the sea\, and nature are often repeated in our work\, reminiscent of fond memories of years living by the coast. As we navigate these similarities\, the beauty of the world is depicted in glass and paint\, inviting the audience to appreciate and examine their own relationship with the world around them.’

SUMMARY:On The Trail of The Yeti – Talk by Steve Berry\, Thursday 24 July\, 7.30pm
DESCRIPTION:Stories of a gigantic ape-like creature roaming around the mountains of the Himalaya have been told for centuries. But could the legendary Yeti actually be real? \nBritish mountaineer and Himalayan traveller Steve Berry (left) is the man with the answers. Steve grew up with his father’s stories of India\, and was beguiled by black and white photos from his dad’s expedition to the Nun Kun Massif in Kashmir. From an early age his ambition to explore in the greatest mountain range on earth grew and grew. He has taken part in nine mountaineering adventures to the Himalaya and has now completed some 80 or 90 treks in Nepal\, Bhutan\, Tibet\, and other parts of the region. In 1987\, with his climbing friend Steve Bell\, he founded a travel company specialising in Himalayan trekking and expedition holidays. \nSteve is the author of two books\, The Thunder Dragon Kingdom (Crowood Press\, ISBN: 1852231467) and Straight Up (Vertebrate Digital\, ISBN 9781909461116). He is a life member of the Himalayan Club\, and has memberships of the Alpine Club and the Climbers Club. \n \nPhoto believed to be of a Yeti footprint\, taken by British mountaineer Eric Shipton in 1951.

SUMMARY:Our Lady of The Waters and The Wye – Talk by Rachel Jenkins OBE & Fr. David Wyatt\, Thursday 21 August\, 7.30 pm
DESCRIPTION:In August 2022\, a small boat carrying a wooden figure of the Virgin Mary made the national news when it set out on a 75-mile journey down the River Wye to draw attention to the disastrous pollution of the river by sewage and industrial waste. In this fascinating talk\, two of the organisers reveal how the expedition was conceived\, planned and staged\, how people reacted\, and the part the ‘Lady of the Waters’ played in the ongoing campaign to save the Wye. \nAbout the speakers \nAfter studying Theology at the University of London\, Fr. David Wyatt pursued various jobs\, including working for charities of the Church and an NHS trust\, before training as a priest at Cuddesdon College. He went on to serve as Curate in three Herefordshire parishes before succeeding Fr. Richard Williams as Vicar of Hay\, Llanigon\, Capel-y-Ffin and Clyro in April 2024. \nRachel Jenkins OBE is Professor Emeritus at Kings College London and a distinguished psychiatrist and epidemiologist. She trained at the Maudsley and Institute of Psychiatry and has worked in the NHS\, the Department of Health as Principal Medical Officer for Mental Health (1987-96)\, and as head of the WHO Collaborating Centre for Mental Health at the Institute of Psychiatry (1997-2012)\, working with low- and middle-income countries on research\, training and policy. After four decades in London she returned to Herefordshire where she was born and grew up\, and is passionately concerned with conservation issues. \nThis is a PAY AS YOU FEEL event\, and donations are welcomed. Space may be limited. Please reserve your seat by buying a free ticket below. \nSTOP PRESS!\nOn Friday 15 August\, The Madonna will be taking to the water again to protest against the pollution of The Wye. The map below shows the route of the voyage and the events planned to take place along the way. \n \n

SUMMARY:'NAME CALLING' – Mosaics by Scandalous Shards\, 6-13 September 2025
DESCRIPTION:Prepare to be challenged\, entertained\, delighted and provoked by this bold contemporary mosaic exhibition by Scandalous Shards. Eighteen mosaic female torsos explore the impact of name-calling\, both playful and derogatory\, on women’s identity. Each has a label (‘Man Eater’\, ‘Gold Digger’) and above it\, a mirror inviting you to see yourself reflected back as part of the artwork. It’s fun\, interactive – and you may even want to take a selfie or two! \nThe exhibition runs from 6 to 13 September\, 10.30am to 4.00pm daily\, excluding Sunday and Monday. \nScandalous Shards is the brainchild of Rachel Louise\, the owner of Rachel Shilston – Inspiring Creativity\, better known for her family-friendly and public-facing mosaic projects in schools and in community spaces. ‘Scandalous Shards’ is Rachel’s after-dark alter ego – a space where she trades the polished for the provocative and dives into themes that don’t normally make the classroom wall. \n  \n
