DESCRIPTION:Once they were hunted to the brink of extinction. Now wild boar are back in the Forest of Dean and parts of Scotland. But are they a threat to people\, property and landscape as some claim\, or should we be actively encouraging and protecting them? \nFor years\, naturalist and writer Chantal Lyons (below) has immersed herself in the world of the boar and those who live alongside them. In this fascinating talk\, she shares her findings and explores the issues raised by the presence of these idiosyncratic\, highly intelligent creatures in our midst. \nAbout Chantal Lyons\nNow based in Gloucester\, Chantal grew upon the tidy\, boar-free countryside of Kent. Her interest in rewilding opened her eyes to the urgency of restoring lost species in Britain and inspired her to study the relations between people and wild boar in the Forest of Dean. The result\, Groundbreakers (Bloomsbury\, 2024) was described by Helen Macdonald (H is for Hawk) as ‘one of the most notable works of recent nature writing’. It was voted BES Marsh Ecology Book of the Year and shortlisted for the Wainwright Conservation Prize 2024. \nPlease note: Space in our first-floor Gallery is limited. She is also a mum\, a care worker\, and a community arts producer\, and is currently working towards an MA in Creative Writing from the University of Gloucestershire. \n  \n  \n  \n Tess Biddington was born in Pinner\, Middlesex\, in 1954 and began writing in 1996. Her poems have been featured on Forest of Dean Community Radio\, at the Cheltenham Literature Festival and in the New Wales Review. Tess is also a former winner of the prestigious Forward Prize for her poem ‘The Death of Descartes’. \n  \n  \n  \nOPEN MIC: HOW TO TAKE PART \nIf you’ve written an original poem and would like a chance to read it to a live audience\, now’s your chance!  Anyone can participate\, whether you’re a seasoned poet\, a budding writer or just someone who enjoys poetry. In her own inimitable style\, Tamar Williams brings together the seafarer and poet Cranogwen and the music hall performer Vulcana in a single swashbuckling steampunk fairytale set against the backdrop of the Industrial Revolution. \nRuntime: 1 and a half hours plus interval. Suitable for ages 12 and upwards. Bar and snacks available. \n \nSimultaneously stirring and soulful\, Tamar Williams is a Welsh and English storyteller in the oral tradition. She has performed all over the world: in schools\, museums and theatres\, on beaches and (the strangest place to date!) once on the top deck of a number 45 bus in Birmingham. Her repertoire is rooted in Welsh and Celtic mythology and folktales\, as well as stories collected on her travels and reshaped for contemporary audiences. Tamar was awarded the national Young Storyteller of the Year Award\, the Gwobr Esyllt Harker Award for a Welsh woman storyteller\, and is currently an Associate Artist for Awen Cultural Trust.

DESCRIPTION:Miranda Richmond’s work stems from a deeply perceptive connection to the subject\, and her images are often as intense as they are contemplative. Wherever she travels\, she aims to depict the landscape as if she were a part of it. FROM NORTH TO SOUTH comprises landscapes from the North of England and from around her new location in Chepstow. It includes studies of Byland Abbey in North Yorkshire (above) and Tintern Abbey\, as well as portraits and figure compositions. \nThe exhibition is open daily from 10.30am to 4.00pm. Admission is free\, and you are welcome to take the lift to our first-floor gallery if you have difficulty using the stairs. \nAbout the artist\nMiranda Richmond was born in Buckinghamshire\, studied in Bristol (BA Fine Art) and then lived in rural North Yorkshire (1982-94) and in Middlesbrough until 2024 when she relocated to South Wales. She has worked primarily as a landscape painter\, but has an ongoing interest in portraiture and figure work. Subjects have included the industrial and post-industrial landscapes of Teesside and the Yorkshire Moors and coast\, but she has also made many painting trips including to Scotland\, Egypt\, Spain and Australia. \nAs a landscape painter her usual practice is to work outdoors directly from the subject\, frequently on a series in one location over a period of months\, even years\, through different seasons and times of day. She makes numerous drawings of a subject in a variety of media\, attempting to discover a dynamic structure which is both a physical response and the result of careful observation. \nPortraiture has included paintings of friends and relations\, colleagues and various local residents. \nMiranda has exhibited in many solo and group shows in the North-East and elsewhere. DESCRIPTION:A much in demand player\, Jim Blomfield is widely recognised as one of the UK’s finest jazz pianists with a repertoire spanning contemporary jazz\, prog-influenced electronica and\, increasingly\, Latin Jazz. \n\n\n\nJim started classical piano lessons at a young age\, but it was only around the age of eighteen that he decided to study music more seriously. His combined skill in improvisation and classical technique came to fruition when he enrolled on a music degree course at Dartington College of Arts\, where he studied not only jazz piano but also composition\, twentieth-century classical music and the Balinese Gamelan. \nSince moving to Bristol in 1991\, Jim has become recognised as an exciting\, versatile and engaging pianist\, appearing with stalwarts of the Bristol scene such as Andy Hague and Kevin Figes and at numerous venues and festivals up and down the country. A highly acclaimed Salsa and Latin pianist\, he also performs with Cuban trumpeter Michel Padron\, the eighteen-piece Dockside Latin Orchestra and Bristol Salsa Orchestra.

But to most of us\, the work of the anonymous hired scribe toiling away in the background is a mystery. So what’s it like to be a ghostwriter? What are the skills required\, and how you do you become one? Mark McCrum reveals the truth in this rare and fascinating glimpse behind the scenes of the publishing world. \nMark McCrum began his career as a travel writer\, with well-received books about Southern Africa (Happy Sad Land)\, Australia (No Worries) and Ireland (The Craic). A continuing interest in the stories of people in unusual settings led him to document the UK’s first two Reality TV series\, 1900 House and Castaway 2000 (both top ten bestsellers). \nHe then wrote about Robbie Williams on his sellout 2001 tour of Europe\, which became the No.1 bestseller Somebody Someday. He has ghostwritten four other top ten bestsellers\, including Bruce Parry’s Tribe and Walking With The Wounded\, describing the celebrated 2011 polar expedition of wounded veterans with Prince Harry.
