SUMMARY:Hidden Landscapes in the Forest of Dean – An Illustrated talk by Jon Hoyle\, Thursday 14 November\, 7.30pm
DESCRIPTION:Above: Artist’s impression of a Bronze Age ring cairn in the Forest of Dean – a type of ritual monument thought to date back to around 2\,000 BCE. (Ann Leaver) \nFrom 2004-2011 County Archaeologist Jon Hoyle led a wide-ranging survey that shed a dramatically new light on the archaeology of the Forest of Dean. Covering an area from Blaisdon to Tidenham\, the study focused particularly on the problem of identifying features in areas of woodland – a difficult environment for archaeological research. The project was an early adopter of LIDAR\, an aerial laser technique which stripped away the tree cover to reveal earthwork remains on the forest floor. \nNearly 1\,700 previously unrecognised anomalies were found\, but only a few could be investigated. Nevertheless\, the exploration of two boundary systems and two enclosures have greatly informed and sometimes revolutionised our understanding of the prehistoric and Roman periods in the Forest. This talk gives an overview of the project\, outlines some intriguing case studies and points to exciting future possibilities for unlocking the Forest’s secret histories. \nJon Hoyle is an archaeologist with Gloucestershire County Council Archaeology Service. Between 2002 and 2011 he directed the Forest of Dean archaeological survey which investigated aspects of the forest’s archaeology and particularly those parts hidden by the extensive tracts of woodland in the area.

SUMMARY:When Modern Art Came to Gloucestershire – An Illustrated Talk by Lee Beard\, Thursday 19 December\, 7.30 pm
DESCRIPTION:Please note: This talk was first given at The George in April of this year and is being repeated by popular demand. Admission is free\, but advance booking is advised. Please reserve your seat(s) using the ticket form below. \nIn May 1938 the exhibition ‘Realism and Surrealism: Several Phases of Contemporary Art’ opened at the Guildhall\, Gloucester. Among the 126 paintings and sculptures on display were artworks by some of the century’s most acclaimed modern artists including Salvador Dalí\, Paul Klee and René Magritte. \nThe British artist Paul Nash\, who had met Picasso in Paris a decade earlier\, was at this time actively involved in the promotion of Surrealist art in Britain. For Nash this was an artistic approach that corresponded with his own distinct renderings of the English landscape as a psychological space. In the late 1930s\, Nash became a regular visitor to Gloucestershire\, leading to a series of paintings\, drawings\, and photographs depicting the region. The Forest of Dean in particular provided a rich source of inspiration for him. \nIn this illustrated talk\, art historian Lee Beard reveals how for a brief period an exhibition in Gloucester connected the city to some of the most notable artistic and political events of the time\, not least the rise of fascism across Europe. As Herbert Read would explain in the foreword to the Gloucester show\, in an age of unrest\, it was inevitable that this was to be reflected in the forms of painting and sculpture on display. \nDr Lee Beard is an art historian\, writer\, teacher and curator. He is a recognised authority on the work of Ben Nicholson (1894-1982) and has published widely on modern art in Britain during the early 20th century.

His enthusiastic and charismatic presence at our wedding celebration really added to the day. Guests were amazed and intrigued by his tricks\, his larger-than-life presentation and humorous delivery. He is utterly charming and a pleasure to deal with. We cannot recommend him highly enough!” Peter Huntley \n“A Night of Perfect Entertainment!”\n\n“The Great Baldini graced the centenary celebrations of Monmouth Chamber of Commerce with his infectious personality\, immaculate presentation\, and mystifying magic. He involved members of the audience without causing them to feel at all uncomfortable\, and exudes old-school charm. The unanimous response is that he wins five stars for a night of perfect entertainment.” Sherren McCabe-Finlayson\, President \n“Blown Away!”\n\n“We saw The Great Baldini at the Cornerstone in Didcot – he was amazing and we were blown away. We loved him so much we asked him to perform at our family party. The show was perfect and had everyone roaring with laughter\, amazed and intrigued at the same time. Thank you\, Baldini\, for giving us a very special memory.” Henry Richards

SUMMARY:DRAW LARGE EXHIBITION all drawings start with a mark
DESCRIPTION:The Draw Large initiative offered a number of mini-residencies for artists to expand their practice by working on a large-scale drawing\, supporting them to create new work during the dark days of winter. Jackson’s Art Supplies donated rolls of paper\, so each artist was given a 1.5 metre square of Fabriano and free rein to experiment\, network and draw on a scale that their home studios might not accommodate. \nThis brief but beautiful exhibition is open for only one week – 25th February – 1st March 11am-4pm. \nOn the final day (Saturday 1st March) you are invited to join the artists to discuss the project and their work. 2-4pm \nWe’ve had great feedback on this pilot and hope this professional development for artists can continue and become a regular occurrence in The George. \nParticipating artist Grace Engel said “Draw Large has been a great opportunity to take on a challenge\, network with other artists\, stretch my creative comfort zone and work alongside others in a beautiful studio space.” \nThe artists come from a range of art practices\, including glass making\, video and sculpture\, as well as printmakers and other visual art media. They are: Ali Roe\, Carolyn Black\, Cherry Lyne\, Chris Comins\, Claire Sibley\, Dorota Rapacz\, Grace Engel\, Jacqui Grange\, Laura Liddell\, Pat Homewood\, Sharon Foley\, Steph Boocock\, Sue Chudley & Wendy Rhodes.

SUMMARY:STILL OUT ambient road trip – Film Screening\, Saturday 12 April\, 7.30pm
DESCRIPTION:Recently premiered at the Stroud Film Festival\, Still Out is an audio-visual collaboration between music producers Will Cookson and Tom Haverly and filmmaker Rufus Exton. The screening will be followed by a Q&A with the filmmakers and by DJ sets inspired by the film. \nNon-narrative in form yet resonant with embedded meanings\, Still Out evokes a road trip from North Yorkshire to North Devon which Will and Tom took together in the summer of 2024. It features luminous footage of the natural world and a soundtrack inspired by their long-standing interest in ambient and electronic music. \nThe film is also an oblique homage to The KLF’s iconic 1990 album Chill Out\, which the pair revisited after it turned up unexpectedly a few years back in Tom’s dad’s record collection. To create their own version\, Will and Tom relocated to the Devon coast in late summer 2023\, splicing together an audio collage from a mix of original and found recordings in a remote cabin with no electricity or mobile reception. \nOnly after Will met friend and filmmaker Rufus Exton later that year to discuss visiting various landscapes referenced in the music did the idea of creating a visual counterpart take shape. The resulting work is a 40-minute reflection on the mental and emotional shift that occurs when we step away from the routine of daily life. An adventure in feeling and form\, it celebrates our ever-changing relationship to the world around us and the mystery of what it means to pass through time and space.

SUMMARY:Regenerative Agriculture – an Illustrated talk by Chris North\, Thursday 22 May\, 7.30pm
DESCRIPTION:Local farmer Chris North reveals how regenerative farming can improve soil health\, enhance biodiversity\, build resilience in the face of climate change and go beyond sustainability to actively restore and enhance ecosystems. \n\n\n\n\n\nChris writes:\n‘Since starting to farm in my own right in 2018 I’ve seen the weather patterns drastically change from traditional seasons to real extremes. As a custodian of the land I have a real passion for pasture-based farming. This\, along with the extreme weather patterns\, really focused my mind on what we farmers can do to improve our environmental credentials. I have taken the farm down the regenerative route not only in order to provide quality feed for my cows\, but also to improve the biodiversity in my soil and grasslands and sequester more carbon.’
