SUMMARY:CONFESSIONS OF A GHOSTWRITER\, Talk by Mark McCrum\, Thursday 12 March\, 7.30pm
DESCRIPTION:Books written by ghostwriters regularly top the bestseller lists\, often selling millions of copies around the world and bringing even greater fame and wealth to their celebrity ‘author’. But to most of us\, the work of the anonymous hired scribe toiling away in the background is a mystery. So what’s it like to be a ghostwriter? What are the skills required\, and how you do you become one? Mark McCrum reveals the truth in this rare and fascinating glimpse behind the scenes of the publishing world. \nMark McCrum began his career as a travel writer\, with well-received books about Southern Africa (Happy Sad Land)\, Australia (No Worries) and Ireland (The Craic). A continuing interest in the stories of people in unusual settings led him to document the UK’s first two Reality TV series\, 1900 House and Castaway 2000 (both top ten bestsellers). \nHe then wrote about Robbie Williams on his sellout 2001 tour of Europe\, which became the No.1 bestseller Somebody Someday. He has ghostwritten four other top ten bestsellers\, including Bruce Parry’s Tribe and Walking With The Wounded\, describing the celebrated 2011 polar expedition of wounded veterans with Prince Harry. Other non-fiction books range from the stories of forced marriage survivors to a lightearted survey of global etiquette. \nMark then turned to crime-writing\, with humorous whodunnits such as The Festival Murders\, Murder on Tour and Ghosted\, with accolades ranging from ‘Book of the Week’ in the Daily Mail to ‘Book of the Year’ in the Literary Review and Mail on Sunday. His next novel\, Death on The Press Trip\, will be published in August 2026 by Bloodhound.

SUMMARY:SEED\, The Untold Story – Thursday 9 April\, 6.30pm
DESCRIPTION:As part of their annual Seed Swap & Shop event\, Forest Food Network present the award-winning film about the passionate seed-keepers\, farmers and activists who are defending the future of our food. The evening includes panel discussion\, Q&A and tasty veggie meal prepared by the kitchen team at The George. \n\nAbout the film\nFew things on Earth are as miraculous and vital as seeds\, worshipped and treasured since the dawn of humankind. In the last century\, 94% of our seed varieties have disappeared. As biotech chemical companies control the majority of our seeds\, SEED: The Untold Story reveals how indigenous seed keepers are fighting a David and Goliath battle to rekindle a lost connection to our most treasured resource and revive a culture connected to seeds. \nSEED features Vandana Shiva\, Dr. Jane Goodall\, Andrew Kimbrell\, Winona LaDuke and Raj Patel. \nForest Food Network \nThe Forest Food Network (or FFN) is all about supporting good\, healthy\, locally grown and produced food. We work with anyone from local businesses to community organisations to help develop a thriving and more resilient food economy in our district.

SUMMARY:SOUND BATH MEDITATION - Monday 13 April\, 7.00-8.00pm
DESCRIPTION:Let the gentle vibrations produced by sound instruments soothe away your stresses and strains as you experience the unique relaxing calm of a sound bath meditation. Sessions held fortnightly in the George Gallery\, £10. For further details or to reserve a place\, please phone or text Katie Potter on 07415 302262. \n\nHealth benefits\nWhether you’re seeking relief from physical pain\, emotional distress\, or looking for peace\, sound baths can bring many benefits for physical and mental health: \n\nStress reduction and anxiety relief: Vibrations produced by the instruments are thought to interact directly with the body’s energy centres\, relieving stress and anxiety by shifting the nervous system from the fight-or-flight response to a state of rest.\nImproved sleep quality: Soothing sound waves can promote deep relaxation\, making it easier for the body to transition into sleep.\nEnhanced mental clarity and focus: A sound bath can help clear away the clutter of incessant thoughts and worries\, helping concentration and focus.\nDeepened meditation and spiritual insight: The vibrations of sound baths are thought to help you connect with your subconscious mind\, allowing inner exploration and self-discovery. Sometimes people experience profound insights or epiphanies during a sound bath.\nPhysical healing and pain relief: Sound bath meditation is thought to stimulate circulation\, enhance immune response\, and may promote the healing of tissues and cells. People with chronic pain conditions\, such as arthritis or fibromyalgia\, often note a reduction in symptoms.\nEmotional release and healing: Sound baths can create a safe space for emotional exploration and release. Because they’re thought to release emotions\, powerful sound waves may help people heal past traumas or deal with grief.

SUMMARY:Jazz at The George: BATTLESHIP POTEMKIN with Live Jazz Score\, Wednesday 15 April\, 8.00pm
DESCRIPTION:Jazz meets revolutionary cinema in this rare chance to experience the classic 1925 silent film by Sergei Eisenstein with live improvised music by Lyndon Owen (soundscapes\, woodwind) and Ashley John Long (double bass). \n\nTickets £12 – all welcome. Drinks and snacks available from the bar. \n  \n\nAbout the film\nWidely considered to be one of the most influential films of all time\, Battleship Potemkin takes place during the Russian Revolution of 1905\, as deplorable conditions on board the armoured cruiser Potemkin drive the ship’s crew to mutiny. \n\n\n\n\nEisenstein wrote the film as  propaganda\, but also used it to test his theories of montage. At the time\, revolutionary Soviet filmmakers were experimenting with the effect of film editing on audiences. Through his use of montage techniques\, Eisenstein’s aim was to maximise the viewer’s sympathy for the rebellious crew of the battleship and hatred for their overlords.
