SUMMARY:Jazz at The George: BATTLESHIP POTEMKIN with Live Jazz Score\, Wednesday 15 April\, 8.00pm
DESCRIPTION:Jazz meets revolutionary cinema in this rare chance to experience the classic 1925 silent film by Sergei Eisenstein with live improvised music by Lyndon Owen (soundscapes\, woodwind) and Ashley John Long (double bass). \n\nTickets £12 – all welcome. Drinks and snacks available from the bar. \n  \n\nAbout the film\nWidely considered to be one of the most influential films of all time\, Battleship Potemkin takes place during the Russian Revolution of 1905\, as deplorable conditions on board the armoured cruiser Potemkin drive the ship’s crew to mutiny. \n\n\n\n\nEisenstein wrote the film as  propaganda\, but also used it to test his theories of montage. At the time\, revolutionary Soviet filmmakers were experimenting with the effect of film editing on audiences. Through his use of montage techniques\, Eisenstein’s aim was to maximise the viewer’s sympathy for the rebellious crew of the battleship and hatred for their overlords.

SUMMARY:CONFESSIONS OF A GHOSTWRITER\, Talk by Mark McCrum\, Thursday 12 March\, 7.30pm
DESCRIPTION:Books written by ghostwriters regularly top the bestseller lists\, often selling millions of copies around the world and bringing even greater fame and wealth to their celebrity ‘author’. But to most of us\, the work of the anonymous hired scribe toiling away in the background is a mystery. So what’s it like to be a ghostwriter? What are the skills required\, and how you do you become one? Mark McCrum reveals the truth in this rare and fascinating glimpse behind the scenes of the publishing world. \nMark McCrum began his career as a travel writer\, with well-received books about Southern Africa (Happy Sad Land)\, Australia (No Worries) and Ireland (The Craic). A continuing interest in the stories of people in unusual settings led him to document the UK’s first two Reality TV series\, 1900 House and Castaway 2000 (both top ten bestsellers). \nHe then wrote about Robbie Williams on his sellout 2001 tour of Europe\, which became the No.1 bestseller Somebody Someday. He has ghostwritten four other top ten bestsellers\, including Bruce Parry’s Tribe and Walking With The Wounded\, describing the celebrated 2011 polar expedition of wounded veterans with Prince Harry. Other non-fiction books range from the stories of forced marriage survivors to a lightearted survey of global etiquette. \nMark then turned to crime-writing\, with humorous whodunnits such as The Festival Murders\, Murder on Tour and Ghosted\, with accolades ranging from ‘Book of the Week’ in the Daily Mail to ‘Book of the Year’ in the Literary Review and Mail on Sunday. His next novel\, Death on The Press Trip\, will be published in August 2026 by Bloodhound.

SUMMARY:FROM NORTH TO SOUTH – Paintings of Landscapes and People by Miranda Richmond\, Tuesday 17 to Saturday 21 February\, 10.30am to 4.00pm
DESCRIPTION:Miranda Richmond’s work stems from a deeply perceptive connection to the subject\, and her images are often as intense as they are contemplative. Wherever she travels\, she aims to depict the landscape as if she were a part of it. FROM NORTH TO SOUTH comprises landscapes from the North of England and from around her new location in Chepstow. It includes studies of Byland Abbey in North Yorkshire (above) and Tintern Abbey\, as well as portraits and figure compositions. \nThe exhibition is open daily from 10.30am to 4.00pm. Admission is free\, and you are welcome to take the lift to our first-floor gallery if you have difficulty using the stairs. \nAbout the artist\nMiranda Richmond was born in Buckinghamshire\, studied in Bristol (BA Fine Art) and then lived in rural North Yorkshire (1982-94) and in Middlesbrough until 2024 when she relocated to South Wales. She has worked primarily as a landscape painter\, but has an ongoing interest in portraiture and figure work. Subjects have included the industrial and post-industrial landscapes of Teesside and the Yorkshire Moors and coast\, but she has also made many painting trips including to Scotland\, Egypt\, Spain and Australia. \nAs a landscape painter her usual practice is to work outdoors directly from the subject\, frequently on a series in one location over a period of months\, even years\, through different seasons and times of day. She makes numerous drawings of a subject in a variety of media\, attempting to discover a dynamic structure which is both a physical response and the result of careful observation. \nPortraiture has included paintings of friends and relations\, colleagues and various local residents. \nMiranda has exhibited in many solo and group shows in the North-East and elsewhere. Alongside her painting practice she has worked variously as a care and support worker\, in adult education\, and in running classes and workshops. \nRecent Exhibitions \n2024: Spring Exhibition\, Oriel CRIC gallery\, Crickhowell\, S. SUMMARY:'GASLIGHT' – An Evening of Storytelling with TAMAR WILLIAMS\, Saturday 22 November\, 7.30pm
DESCRIPTION:“First came giants\, who were made from the bones of the land. Then came men\, who slowly uncovered the layers of rock and earth\, who found the black gold and set fire to it…” \nSo begins GASLIGHT\, the epic story of two real-life Victorian women who forged their own paths from the mountains and shores of Wales to achieve fame and fortune around the globe. In her own inimitable style\, Tamar Williams brings together the seafarer and poet Cranogwen and the music hall performer Vulcana in a single swashbuckling steampunk fairytale set against the backdrop of the Industrial Revolution. \nRuntime: 1 and a half hours plus interval. Suitable for ages 12 and upwards. Bar and snacks available. \n \nSimultaneously stirring and soulful\, Tamar Williams is a Welsh and English storyteller in the oral tradition. She has performed all over the world: in schools\, museums and theatres\, on beaches and (the strangest place to date!) once on the top deck of a number 45 bus in Birmingham. Her repertoire is rooted in Welsh and Celtic mythology and folktales\, as well as stories collected on her travels and reshaped for contemporary audiences. Tamar was awarded the national Young Storyteller of the Year Award\, the Gwobr Esyllt Harker Award for a Welsh woman storyteller\, and is currently an Associate Artist for Awen Cultural Trust.

SUMMARY:Tolkien's Gloucestershire – The Real Middle Earth\, Talk by Andy Meller\, Thursday 23 October\, 7.30pm
DESCRIPTION:From the famous tree-lined ‘Tolkien door’ of St Edward’s Church\, Stow to the grounds of Lydney Park and the Scowles in the Forest of Dean (above)\, the landscape of Gloucestershire profoundly shaped J.R.R. Tolkien’s imagination – and particularly his vision of Middle Earth. \nJoin historian Andy Meller for this intriguing illustrated talk uncovering Tolkien’s lifelong passion for archaeology\, myth and the Gloucestershire landscapes that inspired him. \nNote: This is a Pay As You Feel event\, and donations are invited to help cover our running costs. Space is limited. Please book your seat using the ticket form below. \nAndy Meller’s fascination with all things Tolkienian began when he first read The Lord of the Rings as a student in the early 1980s. Whilst working at Waterstones in Gloucester\, Andy discovered that Tolkien’s wife\, Edith\, was born just a stone’s throw away in Arthur Street. Delving deeper\, he soon realised just how much of a part Gloucestershire and the surrounding area had played in Tolkien’s personal life and writings. \n
