SUMMARY:farOpen Autumn Exhibition\, Tuesday 1 to Saturday 19 October
DESCRIPTION:This year’s Annual farOpen Autumn Exhibition runs from Tuesday 1 to Saturday 19 October. Opening hours are 11.00am to 4.00pm daily Tuesdays to Saturdays and admission is free. A grand total of 46 artists will be exhibiting their work\, including everything from photography and printmaking to glassware\, ceramics and needle-felting. There’s something for everybody\, so why not come along to browse\, shop\, enjoy coffee and cake in the cafe and sample the buzz and excitement of the vibrant local creative arts scene! \nAbout farOpen\nfarOpen – short for Forest and Rivers (Artists’) Open Studios – is a volunteer-run\, artist-led network that organises the popular Open Studios Art Trail each July in the Forest of Dean and along the Severn and Wye rivers. Since its establishment in 2017\, the number of artists it represents has grown phenomenally and the support it offers to artists in the community has broadened correspondingly. Alongside the summer Art Trail\, group exhibitions are held in Summer\, Spring and Autumn\, alternating between local venues. Members also benefit from an online blog for sharing news and advice\, and from regular monthly coffee mornings – a vital support network for a demographic who tend to work alone and can often feel isolated. \nfarOpen’s aims include building a thriving artist community\, increasing year-round visibility and awareness of its members’ artwork\, and holding a range of events and workshops. Through its successful marketing campaigns and exhibitions\, it has done much to promote the Forest and Wye region as a centre of creative excellence. \n

SUMMARY:Strictly Barbershop – An Evening with SPECS APPEAL and OFF THE RECORD
DESCRIPTION:Come along and experience the magic and fun of close-harmony Barbershop singing! This is the first time SPECS APPEAL and OFF THE RECORD have appeared on the same bill and sung together as an octet. During the evening they’ll be teaching the audience a ‘tag’ (the last part of a barbershop song)\, so YOU will have a chance to sing Barbershop too! \nAbout The Performers \nBased in South Gloucestershire\, SPECS APPEAL have been singing together since 2018. Amy usually sings the melody; Kate covers the lower harmony; Hannah\, tenor\, sings the high harmonies\, and Becky\, baritone\, sings all the other notes that no-one else wants! Being able to sing isn’t the only requirement to be a part of this quartet – bad eyesight and owning a natty pair of spectacles is a must! \nAll four members belong to Bristol Fashion Chorus and to LABBS\, the Ladies Association of British Barbershop Singers\, regularly taking part in the annual LABBS convention in October – a whole weekend of glorious song and harmony. They have a wonderfully eclectic repertoire\, from pop songs and favourites from the world of musical theatre to a very special madrigal with a twist. Although they rehearse diligently they are also firm friends\, and practice is always accompanied by chat\, laughter\, tea and cake! \nOFF THE RECORD are: Paul on lead\, Hugh on bass\, Tom on tenor and Hayden on baritone. Their repertoire ranges from classic barbershop arrangements to contemporary arrangements showcasing their versatility and musicianship. The group have been singing together since before the days of Covid\, when most rehearsals took place out of doors\, competing with the sound of local lawnmowers. All four are current or former members of the Great Western Chorus of Bristol\, and the group have been semi-finalists in the National Barbershop Quartet competition for the last two years running.

SUMMARY:MR POTTER'S BEAST – An Illustrated talk by Jason Griffiths
DESCRIPTION:In 1968 television dramatist Dennis Potter (above) was already a controversial figure in his native Forest of Dean when a furious row broke out about the subject of his play A Beast With Two Backs. Potter had based the story on a notorious local incident in which an angry mob of villagers chased and killed two performing bears whom they suspected – wrongly – of killing a child and injuring a local woman. Such was the potency of this dark moment in Forest history that reaction against Potter’s choice of subject prompted a slew of letters to the local newspapers before filming had even started. The correspondence provides a fascinating insight into the Forest community’s relationship with the events of eighty years before\, and even more so with the playwright Potter himself. \nJason Griffiths is a senior research fellow at the University of Gloucestershire and a recognised authority on the work of Forest writers. A founder of Forest of Dean Community Radio and the Reading The Forest initiative\, Jason also helped secure the purchase of papers and materials by Dennis Potter that now form the permanent Potter Archive and Exhibition at the Dean Heritage Museum. \nPlease note: Admission to this talk is free\, but space in our upstairs Gallery is limited. Please make sure of your seat(s) by using the RSVP form below.

SUMMARY:My Life on The Severn – an illustrated talk by Chris Witts
DESCRIPTION:Ever wanted to know more about the River Severn? Then local man Chris Witts is the man to ask. \nChris’s career began at the tender age of 16 when he joined John Harker Ltd as a deckhand on tanker barges. Taking the role of ‘lad’\, Chris joined a four-man team which included skipper\, mate and engineer. A month into the job he was out in thick fog off Sharpness on the night the Severn Railway Bridge was hit by two oil tankers. The two vessels ignited\, setting the Severn alight. Five men tragically lost their lives in the disaster. \nIn this talk\, Chris looks back on this and other incidents in a rich and varied life – a journey that has taken him from his early days on the river to public duties as Sheriff\, and later Mayor\, of Gloucester. \n\nPlease note: space in our upstairs Gallery is limited. To reserve a seat\, please book using the RSVP form below.

SUMMARY:Art Exhibition: Luba Arnold Larnie
DESCRIPTION:Luba Arnold Larnie is a contemporary landscape artist based in Gloucester. She writes: \n‘I’ve always been fascinated by nature and the ever changing shapes and colours formed by the combination of the land\, sky and sea\, particularly those produced from the morning and evening light. My paintings are not always portraits of particular places\, more an attempt to distill a memory of a space with its light and atmosphere therefore leaving them open to other interpretations and perceptions. Colour and texture are at the heart of my paintings.’ \n

SUMMARY:The Skimmington Riots in the Forest of Dean
DESCRIPTION:On ‘Lady Day’\, 25 March 1631\, a crowd in Mailscot Wood\, near Symonds Yat\, pulled down enclosure hedges and attacked strangers working in coal pits\, before staging an event known as ‘The burying of Skimmington’ by throwing an effigy of Sir Giles Mompesson\, one of King Charles I’s favourites\, into a pit and filling it in. Riots against enclosures spread to the centre of the Forest of Dean and other Forests in the west of England and continued for more than a year\, despite many attempts by royal authority to stop them. \nWhile the reasons for the riots are clear\, what did ‘Skimmington’ mean? In this illustrated talk\, historian Owen Adams explain the carnivalesque nature of Skimmington and the power wielded through this festive character by taking a wider look at the Forest\, its landscape\, folk justice and historical contexts. \nPlease note that space in our upstairs Gallery is limited. SUMMARY:All Creatures Tiny & Tall
DESCRIPTION:The George Gallery is delighted they shall be opening a new exhibition hot on the heels of the fascinating and beautiful show “The Plight of Eels” by Julia Manning (March 20th-6th April). Julia’s works are complex layers of relief print processes\, stencils and patterns\, telling the stories of their precarious lives that are affected by human activity. \n“All Creatures Tiny & Tall” opens on 11th April-27th April 10.30am-4pm Tuesday through to Saturday (Closed Sundays and Mondays). Expect a showcase of a glorious range of artist styles\, mediums\, animals and insects. \nThe exhibitors responded to an Open Call and the artists interested in participating have works on display. The images present a wide range of creatures\, from dogs to horses\, jellyfish to insects. \nWe believe that all artists need support to put their works into the world\, whether they are established or new to exhibiting. By being involved in a show like this in a Community Hub\, you learn as you go about the process of creating exhibitions. The George Gallery gives artists an opportunity to show their work\, and visitors will be able to meet them on Saturday 13th April in the gallery. We can’t guarantee all 20 artists will be in the gallery all day\, but do call in and say hello. The artists will also be stewarding throughout the exhibition period\, so you get another opportunity to meet them during your visit. \nExhibitions are free to enter and both framed and unframed works for sale. You will find information about all the artists inside the gallery.
